Your Questions, Our Answers: Navigating Through What You Want to Know and Understand.
What is the role of a tutor?
The role of a tutor is to provide additional assistance to students with their coursework. They are available to help clarify course content and to help students develop effective ways to learn the material. Tutors also provide students with study strategies that they can utilize for exam preparation.
How do I know my child needs a tutor?
Aside from your child getting bad grades, there are some warning signs to look out for, such as: difficulty getting started, sloppy homework, and overall disorganization. Other signs may be: personality change, diminished self-esteem, or a lack of interest in learning.
What are the benefits of getting a tutor for my child?
Working with a tutor can be beneficial to your child by strengthening academic skills, mastering new concepts, preparing for an exam, and building crucial study habits for academic success in school and in life.
How many times per week should my child attend tutoring?
We typically recommend at least twice a week. During the summer, we typically recommend three or more times a week. In general, your schedule helps determine how quickly your child begins excelling in school.
How can summer tutoring help my child?
It’s a great aid in helping your child retain what he or she learned during the school year, and getting them ready for the next school year. For those students who underperformed, it’s a wonderful way to help prepare for the upcoming grades.
Will you contact my child's teacher?
Absolutely! With your permission, we will discuss your child’s academic needs and progress with their teacher(s), school personnel, and other professionals. Remember, teamwork makes the dream work!
What types of tutoring does Mindquest provide?
We tutor all grades, kindergarten through grade 12, in study skills, reading, phonics, spelling, vocabulary, elementary through advanced math, science, and more. We also provide test prep for the SAT and ACT.
Are tutoring sessions virtual or in person?
Both! Based on the needs and constraints of the student and the tutor and their locations, tutoring can be done virtually on Zoom or in person. One of our greatest values is that our tutors come to you! No need to drive to a facility. We bring the tutoring to you, at the comfort of your own home, or at the location of your choosing.
What if my child does not like the tutor?
We understand that with young children in particular, and in instances where a child is not enjoying their studies, first impressions and a strong rapport from the outset are even more critical. Where rapport and confidence are a concern, we suggest that you allow between 3-4 tutoring sessions for your child to settle into the routine and get to know their tutor, before you make a judgement. However, if your child is not settled after this initial period, we can match your child with another one of our amazing tutors.
What can I expect from your tutoring services?
Progress! Our students make great progress in a short period of time. For example, second graders threatened with retention can make so much progress that they avoid retention and, in fact, excel in third grade. Middle schoolers facing an increase in more complex assignments can strengthen their foundational skills that will help them in high school and beyond. High schoolers who need help with specific subjects – or improved study skills – can begin excelling in class. When prepping for the SAT or ACT, expect outstanding results.
Is there a way for the tutor to have the books and materials that the student is working from?
MindQuest Tutoring makes it a priority to match tutors and students. Because all of our tutors are current certified teachers, they have access to the textbooks and content used by the District. Additionally, students are encouraged to scan, email, or take pictures of their materials to share with their tutors.
Are you experienced in working with students with learning disabilities?
MindQuest tutors have real-word classroom experience working with diverse students, including students with physical and/or learning disabilities, as well as gifted students. Due to current legislature and because they are full time teachers, they hold dual certifications.
Are tutors available in other languages besides English?
MindQuest can match you up with an English or Spanish speaking tutor. For students that need additional languages, please call us directly so we can discuss other options to accommodate your needs.
Does Mindquest provide an assessment?
Our tutors provide an initial assessments and can make recommendations based on their observations. Unlike many other tutoring companies out there, there are no additional fees for providing an assessment for your child.
Is virtual tutoring as effective as in-person tutoring?
No telecommunication tool can be as effective as a face-to-face session, but the results of online tutoring are generally very satisfactory, thanks to the high quality of the communication tools and Internet connections available today.
In fact, online lessons have some important advantages over traditional lessons: they don’t require students or teachers to travel and can be much more flexible in regards to the frequency, duration, and scheduling. Tutoring sessions can be arranged very quickly, and the tutors can answer questions and give help in real time when the needs arise.
What type of computer equipment do I need for the online tutoring sessions?
The only equipment necessary for our online tutoring sessions are a computer, Internet access, and/or phone access. Our tutors provide their own Zoom link and use interactive tools, which are all covered by the session fee.
